With this Website I hope to create a "database of shame", a place to share video recordings of the roads, from the cyclists' perspective. Why?
During an assignment which required a 20 mile-a-day commute on my push bike (April, 2006) , I began to consider what equipment could protect me from a random crushing.
Protection post-impact seemed to be missing the point, a measure to reduce the possibility of a car colliding with myself made more sense (beyond higher visibility).
Logic would dictate that if one is totally visible on the roads and cycling cautiously, and the motorist has passed their eyesight test and is employing all learnt driving theory, no collisions could occur
Anyone who has spent significant time cycling on the roads will recognise this as an extremely shaky logic. When 1000 kilo metal boxes (would full body armour help at 40 mph?) are whizzing by inches from yourself, a feeling of vulnerability is natural when the possibility of pain is so near.
It is my belief that motorists are not inspiring fear in their fellow commuters because of a lack of respect for others, or even plain stupidity and poor technique. The problem is an ignorance of the situation other road users are in, compounded by their sensory detachment from the outside world.
So unfortunately “accidents” are bound to happen. And if Fortune decides it's your turn to be tenderised, there's sod all you can do to prevent it, the best one can hope for is for there to be witnesses, and that justice may be done (if indeed it wasn't the cyclist at fault)
To conclude I have followed the Government's example and attempt to film other road users at all times on my travels. With this website I hope to create a venue where motorists may gain a small insight into the world of commuter-cycling without (god forbid) having to sit on a saddle. Over time I hope to allow fellow cyclists to upload their videos and share their thoughts and experiences, creating a resource for anyone who may be interested.
