The Mount
To attach the camera I use the "RAM" video camera mount (pictured left). Rubberised so as to remove some shake, the ball and socket joint allows flexible positioning. See the links section for a (UK) supplier.
The Camera
I decided to use a static-memory based video camera, as the inevitable vibrations might destroy a camera with moving parts (i.e. MiniDV, HDD).
I selected the DV5700 unit by Aiptek. This is a generic unit (I believe Mustek are the OEM) capable of recording 30f.p.s at 640 x 480. Fitted with a 1Gb card this gives 45 minutes of recording, the battery lasts for approx 1 hour of continuous shooting. Cost; Approx. £100.
I chose this unit over the other models because of its shape. The other cameras in this price range seem to be more "upright" in their design, the lens positioned high above the base, which I figured may make the vibrations worse.
See the links section for more choices and (UK) suppliers.
Caution!
This setup served me well for one month on the road, until one day I discovered the camera should really be attached by more than just the thread on the base... The case itself must have shaken in two, causing the thread to let go. Some cleverly bent coat hanger wire would have prevented this!
Sadly this means I cannot provide any fresh content right now (please contact me with yours).
